316-779-7700 ext. 344 Birmingham-Jefferson County Transportation Authority, Birmingham, Alabama, takes delivery of twenty-two Opus Low-Floor buses from Optima Bus CorporationWichita, KS – April 27, 2004 – Optima Bus Corporation announced today that the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transportation Authority has taken delivery of twenty-two Opus low-floor buses. The delivery includes two under-35-ft. units and twenty under-30-ft. models. David Hill, director of operations and maintenance for Birmingham-Jefferson County Transportation Authority, says his organization selected the Opus low-floor bus over other buses for a variety of reasons, not the least of which, was its highly attractive, aesthetic appeal. "The Opus just looks like it would be fun to ride," says Hill. "People see its big, open windows and modern design and are attracted to the Opus just as they are drawn to an attractive car design." "However, the Opus' appeal is more than skin-deep," explains Hill. "The video that demonstrates the side impact test is exceptionally impressive. And, not only is it safe for passengers, but the Opus is also easier and less expensive to repair if an accident occurs than any bus I've ever encountered." The fact that the engine and transmission can be so easily accessed for maintenance or replacement, says Hill, is another advantage the Opus offers that other buses don't. The Opus' short turning radius is yet another plus, according to Hill. "Its maneuverability makes it easy for us to offer service to older neighborhoods with narrow streets. It also maneuvers in and out of traffic quicker, easier and more safely."
